Single Review | FRIEND LIKE YOU | Jaws

Jaws friend like you

Rating: ★★★★★★★★½☆ 8.5/10

Jaws are the latest band to come out of the exciting music scene in Birmingham. Like their fellow Brummies Peace and Swim Deep these boys know how to create swirling atmospheric beats that set you up perfectly for summer sunshine. Those looking to group Jaws into some kind of genre may struggle… surf-pop/lo-fi/chillwave/psych rock are all tags that could apply, but in truth this band are versatile and have that magical ability that all great bands have – they mould themselves to whatever mood you’re in.

Fresh off the tour bus, where they’ve been playing with the likes of Kate Nash, Tribes and Swim Deep these B-Town boys have just released their latest offering FRIEND LIKE YOU. This single features the title track and ethreal b-side BREEZE and is available to buy now.

FRIEND LIKE YOU

An impressive track by any bands standards, but from these relative new-comers it is a real head turner. It pops and fizzes along with a rousing chorus that just begs to be sung with your mates during a festival sunset, cider in hand. These lads are clever and draw influences from all over on this track, the guitar track and chorus are reminiscent of early Arctic Monkeys (Mardy Bum anyone) whilst the dreamy sound is not dissimilar of something by Tribes.

BREEZE

It may be a b-side but just like Friend Like You this track grabs your attention. It effortlessly swirls around in a way that is distinctive of the emerging B-Town sound, the kind of track that you can imagine wafting out of the speakers of a ramshackle old bar on a far flung beach. The symbols crash like waves and warm vocals with lyrics like “Take my heart and run away” inspires your mind to drift from cold, grey days.

On previous releases like TOUCAN SURF, SURROUND YOU and DONUT this band displayed their intent and potential, on this single they proved exactly what they’re made of – talent, inspiration and ultimately the excellent songs to back it up.

Jaws Milkshake EP is out 22nd of April.
